A Front Range, Colorado mother was scheduled for arraignment last week in the death of her 13-month-old son in September of last year. Shannon Johnson, 34, reportedly admitted to police that she was on Facebook while her son was drowning in the bathtub. Johnson reportedly told police her son was playing in the bathtub. She had been checking him regularly, but didn't hear him for a while. When she checked on the baby, she found him sideways with his face in the water, reports say. She pulled the boy from the tub and called 911. The child was airlifted to Children's Hospital, but was pronounced dead later. The autopsy said the baby died of anoxic brain injury, cardiac arrest and drowning, according to reports. Deaths of such young children as this are tragic. Two-Year-Old Survives Near-Drowning - and Long Trip

Tairino Masters was found floating face-down in a lagoon at Spirits Bay, just after New Year's. The two-year-old was barely breathing when his rescuers dragged him from the water, reports say.
By the time he was on the helicopter, he was complaining more of hunger than of his water injuries. Although he developed a fever that night in the hospital, he was discharged the next day fully recovered, reports say.

Woman Found Dead in Boyfriend's Bathtub

The death of a 63-year-old woman who was found last Friday night bent over a bathtub with her face submerged in water is still being investigated by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, reports say. The woman, Claudia Brazington, was pronounced dead at the scene of her 70-year-old boyfriend's house on Woodway Avenue in Libby, Montana. She had only been dead for a short time, reports say. Her boyfriend apparently called emergency crews, saying he had just arrived home and found a woman in his bathtub who wasn't breathing. She was fully clothed and the water was running when she was discovered, according to reports. Evidently, the man didn't recognize Brazington. But the circumstances surrounding her death - and Brazington's explanation -- are abnormal, reports say. Drowning was listed as the cause of death, but investigators have not determined whether the death was an accident or if foul play was involved. Alcohol was apparently a factor in the incident. Sean Ross McGowan, a six-year-old from Dublin who was left with 95% brain damage after he nearly drowned while on an outing in 2007, has settled a court action against for just under a million dollars, reports say. McGowan had wandered away from his group while the caretakers engaged in conversation, reports say. McGowan fell into a Ranelagh Park pond near where the group was walking, only having been discovered by a doctor who happened to be in the area where he fell in. The boy was resuscitated, but was left severely injured, suffering massive and permanent brain damage, leaving him blind and a spastic quadriplegic. He now needs constant care in a residential facility. The circumstances behind this injury are tragic. How will the parents pay for the care the boy needs during his lifetime? Former Police Officer Pleads Guilty in Friend's Drowning

Former police officer Kenneth Reda, 38, plead guilty earlier this month to second degree homicide by vessel, tampering with evidence, violating the oath of a police officer and three counts of making false statements, according to reports.
Reda, along with 35-year-old Brent Stephens and Shelly Powell, were returning from dinner at a lakeside dinner when their boat struck a pylon in the water. Stephens, also an officer, was thrown overboard, His body was found in the water the following afternoon. Although Stephens fell off the boat around 9 p.m., records evidently show that Reda waited about almost two hours before reporting the incident. Reda and Powell also removed beer bottles from the boat before he took Powell back to shore, reports say. Additionally, Reda told police that Stephens had jumped off the boat, and that the two men were the only ones on board. When questioned, Powell first denied she was on the boat but later changed her story, reports say. Both Reda and Powell were both charged with making false statements and obstruction and were later released from the Cherokee County jail on $11,180 bond. Reda was subsequently suspended from his job on the police force, reports say. He could be sentenced to up to 24 years in prison. Carnival Splendor Not So Much a Carnival for Shipmates
Posted By Drowning Lawyer
![]() | ||
At around 6 a.m. last Thursday, the Carnival Splendor glided into the Port of San Diego, pulled by a group of tug boats. The 4500 passengers and crew were ecstatic the trip was over and they would be disembarking. And as they disembarked stories of primitive conditions and horrific smells - from the broken toilets and the food spoiling on board - plus the long lines for food were universal, reports say. The Splendor fell far short of its name when, early into the seven-day cruise, a fire broke out in the engine room, knocking out power to the entire ship. So for the next several days, the ship simply drifted with the currents and passengers had to do without basic vacation amenities like hot food, air condition along and internet service. In fact, for a while, they didn't even have functioning toilets. The boat, with the assistance of six tug boats and five Coast Guard ships, was towed for four days to the Port of San Diego. But it was Tuesday evening before the USS Ronald Reagan -- which was coincidentally in the area for training maneuvers - came to assist in providing food and other basic supplies to the dead ship. So for the next few days, from the generosity of the USS Ronald Reagan, the 4500 had to subsist on Spam, Pop Tarts and a few odd pastries, reports say. Carnival Cruises has reportedly offered each passenger a full refund -- plus another future cruise of equal value, hopefully, without the same issues. Carnival is also reportedly paying the tab for all costs in getting the 4500 people home, reports say. Experts in dealing with situations similar to this are helpful in giving direction to families of those who have had vacation plans - sometimes years in the making - get compensation.
