Drowned Youth's Family Sues City

The family of a youngster who drowned in a Trenton public pool last summer has filed suit against the city, the pool administrator and six lifeguards with negligence, reports say.

Three-year-old Darren Horton, Jr., thrashed for several minutes, desperately trying to keep his head above the water while people swam around him, ignoring his thrashing for at least four minutes, reports say.

Horton eventually drowned in full view of an empty lifeguard chair, as the lifeguard stood two dozen feet away, talking to a female patron. The youngster eventually succumb to the water and sank the bottom. It was only when his 6-year-old cousin pulled him from the bottom that he was eventually attended to by pool personnel.  But after four days in the hospital on a respirator, Horton, Jr. died.
