Missouri Man Drowns

Eugene Smith, 26, of Dyersburg, MO, drowned earlier this month at a popular river in Missouri.

Reports say Smith was attempting to swim across the river near Van Buren, MO. when he began to struggle in a fast-moving current about halfway across. He was evidently pulled under and never resurfaced.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol and Missouri state troopers deployed divers to seacrch for Smith, who was found in 15 feet of water by divers and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reports from the National Park Service estimate that over a million people use the Current River for recreation, and that deaths on the river do occur occasionally.
