Independence Day Drowning Claims Six-Year-Old

A boy on the beach at Sandy Point State Park in Maryland was playing with a ball in the water when he disappeared beneath the surface and drowned, reports say.

The boy, Saquan L. Kennedy, 6, of Baltimore, was with other children playing with the ball in the Chesapeake Bay when he went under, reports say.

As soon as he disappeared, Emergency Services was called and rangers and police - along with volunteers -- searched for the boy until he was found. Although CPR was performed on him, paramedics still rushed him to Anne Arundel Medical Center. Kennedy never recovered and later died, reports say.

The area in which he drowned was not manned by lifeguards. It was located near the park's South Beach area at about 8 a.m. in the morning; lifeguards are evidently not on duty until 10 a.m.. The incident remains under investigation.
