Diver Dies off Galveston Coast

A diver who was found unresponsive after cleaning a ship's hull off the Galveston coast died earlier this month after crews were unsuccessful in reviving him, reports say.

U.S. Coast Guard investigators are looking into how 30-year-old Matt Smock, 30, of Houston, died after working offshore from a service boat.

When crews pulled him from the water, they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the boat docked in Galveston. Galveston firefighters assisted until an ambulance transported the diver to the University of Texas. Smock was pronounced dead at 1:37 p.m., reports say.

So far, reports say, the cause is believed to have been a mechanical malfunction with diving equipment. A commercial diving vessel named the King Arthur was the vessel on which Smock was working, reports say.
