Twin Girls Drown in Texas City Accident

Twin nine-year-old girls drowned earlier this month when they were swept away by water currents near the Texas City dike, just south of Houston, TX.

Reports say the girls, Alexandra and Samantha Suarez, were swimming near the dike Sunday morning when a current pulled them out into the bay. The girls' father attempted to rescue them but he was also swept out by the current, according to the statement.

Emergency crews were immediately dispatched by Coast Guard Air Station Houston, as well as Station Galveston, which launched a boat to find the three swimmers. Two of the three were found - the father and one girl -- but neither the father nor the girl was responsive at the time. The body of the missing sister was found after it washed up onto the beach near the Texas City dike in the evening, reports say.  The man and girl were taken to the hospital, where the girl was pronounced dead. The father, Hector Suarez-Palacios, was reportedly on a life support system in the Mainland Medical Center. The Suarez sisters were students at M.E. Foster Elementary School in the Houston Independent School District.
